Old School Helmet Cam

This is a waterproof wearable video camera system that I put together around 2005 to record waterskiing from the skier’s perspective.  Today you can buy a Go Pro Hero or equivalent camera that’s entirely self-contained and does the job far better.

The heart of the helmet cam system is the lithium battery powered wireless color camera module:

To protect the camera from the elements, an enclosure made mostly from PVC tubing components was made. A lexan window was fitted to the front. The area that the camera “sees” is painted flat black to reduce glare. The wireless camera module slides in from the back and the enclosure is sealed using the rubber cap and hose clamp.

A standard bicycle helmet serves as the attachment method to the user’s head. The styrofoam insert inside the helmet also serves as a floatation device for the camera, should the helmet come off the user’s head while out on the water.

This is the wireless receiver for the camera. It needs to be positioned within about 75 feet of the camera to receive enough signal strength. It was fitted with a remote antenna to help improve reception.

This is a camcorder that is used as a recording device in a protective case. This camcorder allows for recording signals plugged into the AV jack, making it ideal for recording video from the helmet cam.
